About the Artist
Corey Brandon Allen
Corey Allen was born 1973 in Deming, New Mexico. At a very young age he could be found with a pencil in hand, sketching. As a teenager, and without formal training, he decided to pursue art as more than just a hobby.
While living in Dallas, Texas, he began experimenting with pointillism, using markers as his medium of choice. Upon moving to New Orleans, he was instantly inspired by the rich, cultural atmosphere he encountered. He began to apply his style of pointillism on portraits of southern musicians and the architecture of New Orleans.
The transition to oils occurred when another local artist gave Corey a large box of leftover tubes of paint and supplies. Oils, at first a curiosity, became the dominant choice of medium for his art. Corey enjoys the release from oils he experiences when, as he says, "The painting comes to life and takes over."
Over the past 15 years, Corey's art has been displayed in various galleries, restaurants and coffee shops throughout New Orleans. Pre-Katrina Moss Street Gallery was established in the Faubourg St. John neighborhood of Mid City New Orleans. Since taking in flood waters, Moss Street Gallery was re-established in the charming community of Algiers Point. Corey continues to find inspiration in Post Katrina New Orleans, and Algiers Point is a big part of that. He procures work out of his studio, Moss Street Gallery, and is also available for commissioned pieces.
